History of Brookwood House

Brookwood was designed and built by artists Adam Cohen and Elizabeth Woodstock. But that’s only its most recent chapter! Brookwood was originally built in Roanoke, Virginia in the early 1950’s by Arnold Shropshire. He built the original structure as a triplex for himself and his friends.

The stories of Brookwood’s history tell of week long “parties” with Arnold and his friends. There are interesting stories of Arnold keeping monkeys on the property and plenty of local gossip about him and his comrades’ activities. These tales have a decidedly salty tenor, with stories of moonshine,
cards and other activities recounted.
