Our Story

When our family found the Brookwood property in 2003 it had been rented as a triplex for 30 years. It needed some love, but when we found the property, we immediately recognized the magical quality of the location on Back Creek. Over the years we have
seen all types of wildlife, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish! We also recognized the creativity and purpose with which the original designer and builder, Arnold Shropshire had approached the property. We designed Brookwood to be handed down to future grandchildren. It is our masterpiece. We renovated and added on to the original footprint, and we moved into Brookwood in May 2005 after 18 months of hands-on construction. A few years later we renovated the pool. We started working on the hardscaping and landscaping but because of some physical issues the gardens were not maintained or finished being constructed.

I am an architect, builder, sculptor, and energy geek. In 1984 I moved to Floyd County, Virginia, where I designed and built in the Roanoke, Floyd, and New River Valley area. I was co-owner of Structures Design/Build until I sold it several years ago. I have designed and built hundreds of homes for other folks. Brookwood is the fourth home I designed and built with my wife and life partner, Elizabeth.

The feeling we were striving for at Brookwood is one of relaxation, comfort, and safety. At the time we built, I had 40+ employees and was working 7 days a week with no vacations, so I designed and built Brookwood to be a refuge and healing space. When I got home, I wanted “instant calm and comfort”. We have certainly found the Brookwood “aura” to be this way.

In the last 10 years, I have become a leader in the international Passivhaus movement, which is a cutting-edge technology for low-energy high-performance buildings. The knowledge I have is now being sought after all over the world. This has led my wife and I to relocate to Toronto, where I am acting as an educator for a Canadian Non-Profit promoting Passivhaus on the national level. I was also chosen for a 3-year Edmund Hillary Fellowship in 2018 in New Zealand as a Global Impact Entrepreneur and have just been awarded a permanent designation as an Edmund Hillary Fellow. So, Elizabeth and I have chosen to share Brookwood with others, so WELCOME TO BROOKWOOD!

Social Contract

Brookwood House is a haven for everyone: people from all backgrounds, all religions, and identities. We are proud supporters and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community.

We are committed to Tikkun Olam, the Jewish concept of repairing the world. There are many ways to do that. We do our part by supporting the rights of all our community members, always paying a fair wage, and donating to local, national, and international charities every year. We avoid purchasing mass-market art because we know there are talented people working hard to bring us real, human-made works of art. It’s important to us to support the makers.

We incorporate a variety of practices to decrease our environmental impact, including the use of solar panels, composting, recycling, and generally practicing responsible habits regarding water and electricity. We also provide eco-friendly products for you to use during your stay in the home. We encourage our guests to be conscious of their habits during their stay.
